天津爆炸現場訊息混亂，加上網路時代傳遞快速，大陸官方除投入救災，另方面也忙著闢謠。《人民日報》列舉11大謠言逐一釐清，對於爆炸涉事單位負責人與地方領導是否有親屬關係，官方也首度闢謠。

天津爆炸案涉事企業瑞海公司的法人代表只峰是天津市前副市長只升華兒子的傳言，這2天傳得沸沸揚揚，15日上午，天津舉行爆炸事故第四場記者會上，官方首度澄清，兩人並無關係。天津市委宣傳部副部長龔建生強調，只升華只有一個女兒，只峰與他沒有任何關係。

另外，《鄭州晚報》因在微信官方號發布「天津市更換主要領導」的不實訊息，並以「新華社電」為文章開頭，稱原代理市委書記的市長黃興國不再代理，遭大陸國家網信辦處罰關閉一周。此外網信辦繼14日關閉360個涉及造謠的網路帳號後，15日再關閉了50個。

《人民日報》14日晚刊文列出11大謠言：如爆炸隔天傳出CNN記者現場連線遭公安阻止毆打，實則後來CNN在推特上澄清，發生衝突主因是該名記者與罹難者家屬在採訪上發生衝突。有謠言指爆炸後秩序失控，超商被搶，天津市公安局出面澄清並無此事；而天津空氣不佳，甚至會影響到北京，闢謠文章強調此與爆炸無關，且以北京、天津的相對位置來看，慣吹西風的天津並不會影響到北京。

有許多天津在地人的微信朋友圈，瘋傳爆炸核心區遭「全滅」，官方也強調並不屬實；對於是不是恐怖攻擊，官方也強調傳言不實，單純是危險品倉庫爆炸。

在闢謠的同時，《中國青年報》則列出四大謎團，追問究竟是什麼原因造成消防員重大傷亡？事故現場到底有哪些危險化學品？涉事企業的安評報告何時才能公開？到底是什麼引發了爆炸？

不過，在15日的記者會上，這些疑問都沒有得到明確的回答。
